So a little while back now, we were taking a walk through the history books (AKA looking through some old photos some of us had taken) and we came across a pretty stand-out memory from a track day back in 2015. That memory? This awesome VQ35-engined Nissan Sil80!
As soon as I saw the photos, it brought me right back to just how awesome and stand-out this car was on that day almost 4 years ago now. Everything about it was pretty unique at the time, especially for Ireland. It really did look like something straight out of the US scene, which made it even more refreshing.
After finding the photos, we decided we were going to write a little throwback about the car and we teased it on social media. Thankfully, the owner, Dan O’Connor, came forward, sent us a message and let us know a bit more about the history and spec of the car, so let’s dive into a bit of that.
So not all too long after this track day took place, Dan dropped off for a year or two, before he came back around and undertook a full restoration on a BMW 325i E30 Sport, which he says pretty much took all the time and funds away from any plans he had for the Sil80.
Once the E30 was finished though, it was decided that the Sil80 definitely needed some attention, having gone on fire not once, but twice over the years. Dan says he gave the car a full rebuild, “just to tidy it up”.
Although Dan has switched his attention to an R32 road car
Dan, of course, plans to use the Sil80 at plenty of track days later this year, and we think our Drift Games Drive days in association with Club Loose Ireland would be the perfect place. Who else would like to check out this car in Mondello Park very soon?
Before we jump right into the spec list and the rest of the photos we were able to dig up of the car, Dan has asked us to give a special mention to his friend Colm Murray, who he describes as the brainchild behind and executor of 90% of the work done to the car. Basically, anywhere the spec list says “custom”, it means Colm made it!
